Hundreds of volunteers from CaliforniaVolunteers, The Salvation Army of Sacramento County, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the community will join forces on Saturday, April 25 to build a new, safe playground at The Salvation Army Oak Park campus (2nd and Alhambra).
In less than eight hours, hundreds of volunteers will build a playground to serve thousands of children in the community every year. The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by children who attended a “Design Day” event in March. Currently, the children have only outdated equipment to play on, which will be removed to make way for the new playground.
The kick off ceremony for the event will take place at 8:30 AM before a ribbon-cutting ceremony will dedicate the new playground at 3 PM. In between, volunteers from the community will assemble playground equipment, mix concrete, move more than a ton of mulch and paint a mural dedicated to Cesar Chavez among other activities.
This playspace project is one of six sponsored by CaliforniaVolunteers to celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez. Since 2007, CaliforniaVolunteers has sponsored more than 20 playspace builds constructed by more than 6,000 volunteers and supported 77 afterschool service clubs in Title I middle schools across the state.
