On June 9, about a dozen people were the first group to volunteer during Food Box Packin' Tuesday, a time in which volunteers can help create food boxes at The Salvation Army Family Services warehouse in Midtown Sacramento.
"The demand for food boxes has increased and like other non-profits, our ability to hire extra staff is not there," said Ava Simpson, Salvation Army volunteer coordinator. "So we wanted to make a fun opportunity for people to help out, give back to the community and learn a little bit more about The Salvation Army. We hope to get an assortment of corporate groups, church groups and youth groups to come out for the day."
More than 300 food boxes were created by the first "Food Box Packin' Tuesday" group. It took less than three hours for the volunteers to stuff the nonperishable food items into the boxes.
"Right now I'm on my summer break and so it just gives me something to do and fellowship with others," said volunteer and Elk Grove resident Jordan Wong.
Many of the volunteers also said they wanted to help because they understand that there is a great need in the Sacramento community.
"I see the difference we can make as volunteers" said Charmaine Bassett of the Spirit of Excellence Christian Center. "As we are producing the boxes, we know we're playing a part to help a family in need. I've always been a big supporter of The Salvation Army and it's just makes me feel good that I'm able to help the community."
